Language has two functions: rhetorical (the implied meaning) and grammatical (the literal meaning). Think about the implied and the literal meaning of the following sentence:
“I can feel your pain.”
What does this statement mean?
When would you say this to someone?
What does this statement say about the nature of God?
Write down “Christian sayings” and choose two or three to reflect on using the questions above (or use the following examples for your reflection).
- “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good”
- “It is okay because God has a plan”
- “It was God’s will”
- “God has blessed me with…”
- “In the name of Jesus,…”
- “It was such a God thing”
- “Please pray for me”
